Bandh hits life in capital

Roads were blocked and shops and business establishments remained closed in various parts of the capital today following the countrywide bandh called by the BJP

NEW DELHI: Roads were blocked and shops and business establishments remained closed in various parts of the capital today following the countrywide bandh called by the BJP over the Amarnath land transfer issue.

The DND flyway in Noida, Vikas Marg in East Delhi, Lakshmi Nagar and Karol Bagh were some of the major arterial roads which were blocked.

Buses were diverted from the busy areas of East Delhi following the blockage.

"It took me one and a half hours to cross the Lakshmi Nagar stretch which usually takes 20 minutes," said Ankita, a harried commuter.

There were also reports of VHP activists forcibly shutting shops in the Lakshmi Nagar area.

Shops were also closed in Karol Bagh. Delhi police, however, said adequate security arrangements have been made in view of the strike call and a strict vigil was being maintained.

It is a peaceful bandh and no untoward incidents have been reported so far, a Delhi Police spokesperson said.
