The bandh has been called jointly by All Tiwa Students Union and Karbi Students Union for a separate autonomous council for Tiwas under the provisions of the sixth schedule of Constitution and scheduled tribe status to Karbis living in the plain districts of Assam.

Official sources said five persons were injured as bandh supporters pelted stones at vehicles besides setting ablaze tyres in several areas in a bid to enforce the 24-hour shut down.

The bandh evoked total response in entire Morigaon district and parts of Kamrup (Metro) and Nagaon district.

All schools, colleges, business and commercial establishments remained closed and vehicular traffic remained off the road, including on NH 37, the sources said.
