MOSCOW: A ban on the publication of the findings of any public opinion polls and forecasts, connected with the upcoming March 2 presidential elections in the Russian Federation, takes effect on Tuesday.

Under the provisions of the law, five days prior to the polling date, it is prohibited to make public the findings of public opinion polls and other surveys concerning the election campaign. This also applies to the distribution of such findings in general utility networks, including the Internet.

The ban has been prompted by the need to rule out any influence on the freedom of expression of people's will. The findings of sociological surveys have been galore during the election campaign.

The leading Russian organizations throughout recent months have been making public the findings of their surveys concerning a potential voter turnout or results that would be achieved by each of the four contenders for the presidency.
