Bahrain reports 4,000 cases of runaway workers

Nearly 4,000 cases of runaway or absentee workers have been reported by employers in Bahrain to the country's labour market regulating body.

DUBAI: Nearly 4,000 cases of runaway or absentee workers have been reported by employers in Bahrain to the country's labour market regulating body.

The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) had earlier urged employers to report all runaway cases to its office before June 30, to avoid fees and legal liability.

The body, which recently took over the responsibility of issuing work visas to expats from the Labour Ministry, is still receiving complaints about runaway expatriate workers, it said.

"We have so far received reports of nearly 4,000 runaway workers," LMRA e-services and public relations manager, Waheed Al Balushi told Gulf Daily News.

"In fact, we do not want to officially call them runaway workers. We want to say that they are absent from work," he said.
