Former Samajwadi Party MLA Azam Khan was booked on Friday for objectionable statement against women and children in a recent election meeting in Rampur, three days before voting is to be held in a by-election in the constituency.

Khan has been booked days after he was sentenced for three years for incendiary statements he made during the 2019 election campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Yogi Adityanath and then district magistrate of Rampur. The conviction caused him to be disqualified from the assembly, leading to the bypoll.

Deputy superintendent of police of Rampur Anuj Kumar Chaudhary said a woman named Shehnaz has filed a complaint against Khan and has also submitted an audio file to the police.
