NEW DELHI: As a final gearing up before the Lok Sabha elections, two former chief ministers���Ghulam Nabi Azad and Luizinho Faleiro���are likely to be given berths in the AICC. The Congress is likely to make an announcement after February 26, when the ongoing Parliament session comes to an end.
A senior member of the party, Ghulam Nabi Azad is likely to be given a key responsibility. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister has had one of the longest tenures in the Congress Working Committee in recent years. He has also been the party in-charge of almost all states at one point of time or the other. The former Goa chief minister Luizinho Faleiro���s name has been in the reckoning for some time now as a possible replacement for Mrs Margaret Alva.
There are currently two vacancies at the general secretary level��� with Margaret Alva resigning and Ashok Gehlot being made the Rajasthan chief minister. However, the party is not presenting the induction of Mr Azad and Mr Faleiro as filling up of vacancies. Instead, the induction is being presented as the ���putting together of a functioning election team���.
It for this reason that it is unlikely that any of the current office bearers will be moved out, as it would send out a ���wrong signal���. However, functionaries who are contesting elections will have reduced responsibilities.
