"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has taken the initiative and appealed to the entire nation to maintain peace, tranquility and communal harmony in the wake of the September 24 verdict of Allahabad High Court in the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid. In line with this I appeal to the people to maintain peace and communal harmony on that day", he told reporters here.
Azad said all AICC general secretaries have been asked to visit their respective states and hold meetings with their party leaders and workers to call upon them to take measures in supporting their governments to maintain peace and harmony and not to give to room for any trouble mongers.
"The Congress is trying to shoulder its responsibility in sensitising the state governments on the matter.Cutting across party lines, it is duty of all parties and people belonging to all castes and religions to maintain peace", he said.
Azad said during his visit to Tamil Nadu yesterday and Karnataka today he held several rounds of meetings with the leaders of communally sensitive regions.
"Total communal harmony must be maintained whatever may be the judgement because the aggrieved party has the opportunity to go for appeal in the Supreme Court. Whatever might be the conviction of the people, it is the country which is most important", Azad said.
