NEW DELHI: A bench led by CJI Ranjan Gogoi said on Thursday that a statement by UP cooperatives minister Mukut Verma claiming that the “Supreme Court is ours”, in the middle of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit hearing, “has to be deprecated”.

The SC’s attention was drawn to the minister’s statement by senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, who is representing the Sunni Central Waqf Board in the long-drawn battle over title of the disputed 2.77 acre in Ayodhya on which the now-demolished Babri Masjid once stood.

When the court convened for the hearing, Dhavan referred to the BJP MLA’s controversial statement hinting at his party’s resolve to build a temple at the spot. He also referred to alleged threats made to his staff for appearing in the case.

Dhavan, who is appearing in the case pro bono, had earlier complained to the bench about the threats. The court had earlier issued contempt notices to a retired Chennai professor who had sent a letter cursing Dhavan for appearing for the Muslims in the case.
