The Ministry has decided to put in place a suitably designed inspection and maintenance system for vehicles.
"A model of automated inspection and certification centre was designed and a scheme is being implemented for setting up of one such centre in each state," Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Pon Radhakrishnan said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha today.
Ten such centres have already been sanctioned, one each in Telangana, Karantaka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi on a pilot basis, he said.
"The centre at Nasik in Maharashtra is already functional," the Minister informed.
He further said recently two more centres for Odisha and West Bengal have been sanctioned.
The safety and emission requirements can be achieved if the vehicles go through a fitness test at regular intervals, Radhakrishnan said.
The scheme which was initiated during the 11th Plan period is continuing in the 12th Plan, he added.
