NEW DELHI: An unbeaten century by Andrew Symonds powered Australia to 317 for eight against India on Sunday in the sixth one-dayer in the western Indian city of Nagpur.

Symonds punished the Indian bowlers after their initial success saw Australia slump to 129 for four in the 22nd over. His 107 not out was studded with nine fours and four sixes.

Other Australian batsmen to prosper were opener Adam Gilchrist (51) and skipper Ricky Ponting who missed his half century by one run.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. Michael Clarke opened the innings in the absence of Matthew Hayden who was rested because of a hip injury suffered in the previous match.

Clarke was out without scoring in the first over. He tried to flick a delivery from Indian pace bowler Zaheer Khan to fine leg and was given out caught behind.

The early setback didn't deter Gilchrist and he hit Sreesanth for two fours in the next over.

Ponting also began punishing the Indian bowlers. He swiveled and pulled a short-of-a-length delivery from Zaheer Khan over square leg for six.

The pitch offered nothing in terms of swing or seam movement. The Indian pace bowlers offered Gilchrist and Ponting far too much width and that helped the two to put on 98 runs for the second wicket. India also fielded poorly and dropped chances offered by the Australian batsmen.

Ponting was out when Rahul Dravid at first slip clasped a thin outside edge off the bowling of offspinner Harbhajan Singh. Ponting's 49 included seven boundaries and one six.

The Indians grabbed two more quick wickets of Gilchrist and Brad Hogg.

Gilchrist was out in the 16th over as he tried to hit over cover a good length delivery from pacer Irfan Pathan, failed to get the elevation and Robin Uthappa took a simple catch. His 51 came off 47 balls, including eight boundaries.

Symonds was dropped when he had scored just 2 runs. He played a halfhearted sweep off Harbhajan Singh and the top edge flew to long leg where Shantakumaran Sreesanth got both hands to it but could not hold on to the chance.

Earlier, Dravid had dropped Gilchrist when he was on 16 as the ball rebounded off his fingers at gully. Gilchrist had driven on the up and the ball flew off the edge of the bat to gully.
