MUMBAI: Australia posted a fighting total of 166 for five led by captain Ricky Ponting against India on Saturday in a one-off Twenty-20 international at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, the first ever in India.

Ponting was in cracking form, pulling and lofting the ball to the boundary.

His 76 runs in 53 balls saw him hit 13 boundaries before being bowled by paceman Irfan Pathan in his last over.

After Ponting, the main run scorers for Australia were Michael Clarke (25 off 15 balls) and Andrew Symonds (20 off 18).

After an aggressive start, the quick fall of wickets toward the end of the innings slowed the Australians preventing them from reaching the boundary as often they would have liked.

It began with a spot of bad luck for Symonds who was run out after putting up a third-wicket 50-run partnership with Ponting.

Symonds was stranded halfway down the pitch after Ponting offered a leading edge and looked to set off for a run. The mix-up between the two batsmen saw Symonds unable to scramble back to the non-striker's end.

In the next over, a struggling Brad Hodge attempted to pull a slower ball from Pathan, but missed and was bowled for just two runs.

Earlier, openers Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden began with some aggressive stroke play, but India struck with an early wicket.

Gilchrist (12) smashed three boundaries in the first over off pace bowler Rudra Pratap Singh till a fifth ball yorker took out his middle stump.

Hayden (17) was the next to go, an inside edge off Harbhajan Singh and Australia were two wickets down with 60 on the board after seven overs.

Tight bowling by off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik frustrated the Australian batsmen.

Australia won the toss and chose to bat. The visitors have said they were keen to take on India, the World Twenty-20 champions, after defeating the hosts 4-2 in the recent limited-over international series.

A fit Matthew Hayden was back in the Australian team along with Stuart Clarke, while Mitchell Johnson is out.

India plays the younger side that beat Pakistan for the World Twenty-20 championship in South Africa last month without veterans Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.
