Aug 28 deadline for Marathi nameplates: Raj Thackeray

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray on Saturday asked shopowners to put up nameplates in Marathi by August 28.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray on Saturday asked shopowners to put up nameplates in Marathi by August 28. "By August you (shopowners) have to decide which would be a cheaper option, having Marathi nameplates or having your shop," Raj warned at a function organised by MNS members to donate eyes.

"My deadline was set to expire on August 14 but as the Municipal Commissioner has also given August 28 as the deadline, we will treat this as the cut-off date for putting up Marathi nameplates", he said. The MNS chief had last month appealed to Marathi officials to stop abetting 'outsiders' by issuing bogus domicile certificates and driving licences, saying these acts were rendering the state bankrupt and leading to spurt in crime.

Raj also warned media to call the country's financial capital Mumbai and not as 'Bombay'. "When media can call other cities by their official names, like in case of Bengaluru, why not use the same yardstick for Mumbai and stop calling it Bombay," he had said. Raj said he had written to shopowners asking them to implement his Marathi diktat within a month.
