Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi encourages CVC to exercise power over CBI
NEW DELHI: Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi encouraged the Central Vigilance Commission ( CVC) to exercise its power over the CBI, and asked the anti-corruption watchdog to come up with ‘preventive measures’ to check corruption.

Speaking at a lecture at the CVC, Rohatgi said that from his experience while dealing with CBI cases he had observed that the agency hesitated to provide the details of the cases being investigated to the CVC, despite the latter’s superintendence over the investigating agency. Addressing the central vigilance officers (CVOs), Rohatgi said: “The CVC shall not act as a post office and demand from the CBI the details of cases filed, factum of the chargesheet, and factum of the closure report from time to time.”

The CVC and CBI, many times, have been at loggerheads over sharing information in highprofile corruption cases, with latter maintaining that it is an independent agency and only answerable to courts for their investigations. Rohatgi also urged CVC KV Chowdhary to suggest amendments in the CVC Act. “The CVC should give a report to the government and highlight the limitation” of the law, he said.
