ATM van driver flees with Rs 20 lakh cash in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: In second such incident in the last one month, a driver attached to a private firm, depositing money in ATMs, fled with the van containing Rs 20 lakh on Saturday night in Bengaluru's Wind Tunnel Road.

Unlike the previous case of November 23, the ATM van and the missing cash were recovered from two different locations by Sunday morning. The driver is, however, missing and special teams have been formed to track him down, said senior police officers.

The driver, identified as Sibbin Hussain, 26, a native of Assam, was working with Secure Value India, a company responsible for transportation of cash for various ATMs, for the past five weeks.


The ATM van filled cash Rs 52 lakh, left at the agency in Madiwala in southeast Bengaluru around 2pm. Initially Rs 2 lakh were deposited in one ATM in Koramangala and the van headed towards Wind Tunnel Road nearby.

MB Boralingiah, DCP, Southeast said that between 5pm and 5.15pm, as two employees of the agency went inside to drop cash in an ATM, the driver fled from the spot. At the ATM in Wind Tunnel Road, the two employees of the agency took Rs 30 lakh and walked towards the bank. By the time they returned, the driver had fled with Rs 20 lakh left in the vehicle.

A case was registered with the police around 9pm. On Saturday night, HAL police tracked down the ATM van in Yemalur, however the trunk with cash was missing from the vehicle. Boralingiah said on Sunday morning, the trunk was found in Bellandur junction, around 4km, from where the van was found.
