These eight migrants from Purulia district (six from Mufassal Police Station and two from Arsha Police Station) had been working at Jai Durga Bakery in Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh, Trinamool claimed. They have returned to Bengal after the incident.
They were allegedly assaulted by a group of local Bajrang Dal activists, as claimed by the migrant workers, on Sunday.
Sk Aslam said in a purported video, the veracity of which has not been verified by ET, “I am a resident of Purulia’s Chepri village. We went to Chhattisgarh and were working in a bakery. The incident happened on Sunday. Suddenly, our owner told us to leave and said he would pay our dues. But before we could leave, a group of 50–60 people from Bajrang Dal came and beat us. We were called Bangladeshi despite showing our identity proofs. Then we were taken to the local police station.”
Aslam claimed four of them were kept in the local police station, while others were kept in a separate place. They were later rescued and returned to Purulia.
Aslam said they were released on Monday and reported the matter to the local police station in Purulia.
These migrant workers include Sk Aslam (30 years), SK Jasim (42 years), SK Babi (23 years), Jaharul, and SK Julfikar (21 years), all from Chepri village in Purulia district.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been raising the issue of torture and attacks on migrant workers and has kindled Bengali asmita as Bengal is set to go for the Assembly polls in 2026.
