At least 130 tigers poached in past 5 yrs since '99
At least 130 tigers have been poached in the past five years since 1999 in reserved forests in different parts of the country, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.
"Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have reported 28 poaching cases each followed by Madhya Pradesh (15) and Assam (12)," Minister of Environment and Forests S Regupathy said in a written reply.
To save tigers from extinction, the government is taking several steps, including plans to set up eight new tiger reserves and strengthening of anti-poaching activities, he said.
On the international front, the minister said India has made an appeal to China to phase out tiger farming.
Replying to another question, the minister said there was no proposal for captive breeding of tigers.
