At least 12 people injured in ONGC's gas well fire in Surat

At least eight persons were injured today when an ONGC's gas well near Surat in Gujarat caught fire during a repair operation.

MUMBAI: State-run ONGC had an accident at its well in Surat district with fire breaking out, possibly due to gas leak, and injuring 12 people.

"During a repair-maintenance job being carried out on Well Olpad #31 by work-over rig in Surat district, fire broke out at 12:30 today (Saturday)," the company said.

According to company sources, there was a blowout at the well and during the process of setting up the blowout preventer; there was gas leak which resulted in fire.

An ONGC executive aware of the issue told ET that the fire was now under control. Of the twelve people injured, four had minor injuries and were relieved after first aid, while eight were taken to the hospital.

Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, tweeted, "Deeply saddened with accident at ONGC drilling site, Olpad, Surat;12 people hurt(8 in hospital); instructed ONGC to provide all medical care."

"Such accidents are not acceptable; Have also asked for a probe to the incident of accident at ONGC site and fix responsibility," Pradhan said in a second tweet.

Among those injured were 2-3 contract workers while others were employees of ONGC, primarily from the crisis management team. ONGC executives said that the site was away from residential area and no other damage was caused.
