Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said, “We will bring a bill where it will essential that student has to study Assamese as one of the subject for getting a government job needless to say for Barak valley and Bodoland it will be Bengali and Bodo respectively.”
He added, “If one does not know the language of the state how will he know the notings in the files. "
In the wake of protest against Citizenship Amdendent bill (CAA) last month state cabinet also decided to recommend to the Centre to amend the Constitution and make Assamese the state language permanently.
Protesters feared CAA would threaten the language, culture and tradition of Assam.
Sarma had earlier stated “Assamese will be a compulsory subject in all school of the state except in Barak Valley, Bodoland and two hill districts. We will move the Centre to amend constitution to retain Assamese as the state language forever, except in Barak Valley, Bodoland territorial council and two hill districts administered by the sixth scheduled councils.”
