Guwahati: Chief of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) Promod Boro who is the third candidate of NDA for the three Rajya Sabha going to polls said that his Rajya Sabha nomination is backed by three minority MLAs.

Boro told the media person, “What’s wrong if 3 MLAs from minority community supported my Rajya Sabha nomination? I’m here to serve all communities of BTR and Assam.”

The three MLAs belonged to the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). While opposition parties in Assam could not field a candidate for Rajya Sabha seat, NDA has fielded candidates for all the three seats. UPPL is an ally of the BJP government in Assam.

Three candidates including cabinet minister Jogen Mahan, BJP MLA from Duliajan Terash Gowala and Boro filed their nomination for election to the Upper House on March 5.

Assam currently has seven seats in the Upper House of the parliament. Three of the seven seats currently held by Bhubneswar Kaita, Rameswar Teli (Both from BJP) and Ajit Bhuyan of the Asom Gana Mancha are falling vacant on April 9.

Boro said he would raise the issues faced by people from Bodoland, Assam, and the entire Northeast in Parliament. “UPPL did this for the people of Bodoland. Whatever issues are faced by the people — be it from Bodoland, Assam or the Northeast as a whole — we will try to raise them in Parliament,” he said.
