Assam to soon start process of releasing declared foreigner who has completed three years in detention camp

There are around six detention centre spread across the state.

GUWAHATI: Following the Supreme Court order, Assam government has decided to release declared foreigner staying in detention centres for over three years.

There are around six detention centre spread across the state. In a communique the state government stated that the detainees would have to produce two sureties of Rs 1 lakh each, besides a verifiable address, in order to be set free.

The statement added that they will also be required to provide biometric information such as fingerprint and iris scans, besides photographs, and report to a police station in their locality every week.


Assam parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patwary said on Monday that foreigner tribunals have identified altogether 1, 17,164 foreigners till March 31 this year.

Answering to a question of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) legislator Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Patwary in a written reply stated since 1985 till June 30 2019 around 29,855 foreigners had been expelled.

The minister informed that from 2005-06 to 2018-19around Rs 168.02 Crore were spent for foreigner tribunals. Centre’s share was Rs 81.94 Crore.
