Assam to promote traditional attire among government employees

The government is exploring if traditional attire, Dhoti and kurta for male and Chadar Mekhela for female can be wore on first and third Saturdays.

GUWAHATI: BJP-led Assam government has decided to promote traditional attire among the state government employees.

The government is exploring if traditional attire, Dhoti and kurta for male and Chadar Mekhela for female can be wore on first and third Saturdays.

Principal Secretary personnel, Administrative reforms and training , P.K Borthakur in a letter to P.K Tiwari, Principal secretary General administration department stated, “ It has been observed that there is no dress code of officers and employees in general for normal office works. On the occasion of civil services Day, 2017 as per appeal of the chief minister, many officers came dressed up in traditional attires, Dhoti and Kurtas by male officials and Chadar Mekhela by lady officials.”

The letter added, “This was appreciated by public in general. It appears that coming in traditional dresses also induced feelings of enthusiasm and spirit among the officer. In this regard, as advised by the chief secretary, you may like to formulate a suitable proposal asking officials/employees to come dressed up with traditional dresses on 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the week on voluntary basis.”
