Assam to hand over Ram case to CBI

Stung by allegations of its involvement in the kidnapping and killing of FCI official Phul Chand Ram, the Assam Government on Monday decided to hand over the case to CBI.

GUWAHATI: Stung by allegations of its involvement in the kidnapping and killing of FCI official Phul Chand Ram, the Assam Government on Monday decided to hand over the case to CBI.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters here that it had been decided to hand over the case to CBI to find out the truth and also because of allegations that the government was involved in the killing (of Ram).

In his first reaction to the sensational kidnapping and killing of Ram in crossfire at Borkapanitema village on July 12, Gogoi said that the accusations (of police and government involvement) were "baseless, false and malicious".

"The reports that I myself was involved in the case were concocted and aimed at maligning the government," he said.

The Chief Minister also referred to Ram's son Prabin's demand for a CBI probe, saying "since he and the family want an inquiry, we will do so as I do not have anything to hide."

Asked if the government had prior information about Ram's presence, the Chief Minister said, "We had information that he was in that area...but not in that particular house where he got killed..Ram was killed in the crossfire between ULFA militants who held him captive and the police."
