Assam publishes first draft of National Register of Citizens with 1.9 crore names

GUWAHATI: After a wait of several years, Assam publishes first draft of Supreme Court monitored National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The Supreme Court had directed publication of the draft NRC for Assam on or before December 31, 2017.

Registrar General of India Sailesh said that the first draft of NRC contains names of 1.9 crore applicants which are verified out of 3.29 crore population.


He added, “Rest of the application are under different stages of verification.”

The process of seeking NRC application started in 2015 with an aim of wedding out illegal immigrants from Assam.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged the people not to panic if their names do not appear in the part draft of the NRC.

He assured that no genuine Indian citizens would be excluded from the NRC and if their names is left out from the part draft of the NRC, there is provision to submit claims and objections against the same. The Government would also extend all support in this regard.

Chief Minister appreciated the people of the state for their cooperation in the entire process of NRC updation and urged them to continue their positive endeavours in future as well. Sonowal mentioned that the entire NRC updation process has been carried out in a transparent manner and there is no reason to panic.

“The government is keeping close watch on the use of social media like facebook, twitter etc. and if somebody is found to be spreading misinformation, strict action would taken against such person”, he cautioned.
