Assam polls: Rahul Gandhi says US-India agri deal will ‘crush and erase’ Indian farmers
During campaigning for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections in Karbi Anglong, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the India–US agreement. Gandhi said the deal has implications for agriculture, energy purchases, data handling and imports from American companies. He alleged that opening sectors such as soybean, pulses, fruits and cotton to US producers could affect Indian farmers, and claimed that small businesses and industries could face pressure due to increased imports. Gandhi also linked the issue to voters during the Assam campaign, urging them to understand how international agreements impact domestic economic conditions. The remarks came during his address in Karbi Anglong as part of the ongoing Assam elections campaign.
