GUWAHATI: In a major crackdown Assam police on Friday arrested Dr. Rakesh Paul, Chairman Assam Public service commission (APSC).

Reform and weeding out corruption from APSC was an electoral issue in recently held assembly polls in Assam.

Dibrugarh Superintendent of police, Gautam Bora told ET, "We have arrested him and he will be produced before the court on Saturday."

In past the Division Bench of Chief Justice (Acting) K. Sreedhar Rao and Justice P.K. Saikia of Gauhati High in a judgment delivered in the open Court directed Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a preliminary inquiry against Paul.

Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi, who is also the president of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti had done series of protest against the alleged gross irregularities in the selection of the candidate by APSC.

Even former Assam Governor, P.B Acharya and congress party were engaged in war of words over the APSC affair. Soon after taking reins of power in Assam, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had standoff with Paul.
