GUWAHATI: Following the death of two people by an irate mob - on the suspicion of them practicing witch craft - Assam police have arrested nine people in relation with the incident, which took place Wednesday.

The incident took place in the remote Rohimapur area under the Dokmoka police station of Karbi Anglong district.

“So far, the assault weapons and nine accused directly involved in the incident could be arrested. Mortal remains of the victims from the burning pyre as well as soil samples from the assault site were collected in presence of Executive Magistrate. A case is being taken up under proper sections of law,” a senior police officer said under condition of anonymity.


“Efforts are on to nab the remaining culprits. The incident took place as a woman from the village died in the hospital. There was a rumor that a woman in the village is behaving in a strange way and a group of villagers alleged this woman was practicing witchcraft due to which she was killed,” added the police officer.
