Assam police arrest cattle smuggling kingpin

GUWAHATI: Assam police has launched a crackdown on illegal cattle smugglers and arrested its kingpin from Bihar. The crime branch of Guwahati police along with its Bihar counterpart arrested Mohammed Sarfaraz from Pandey Parsa under Phulbaria Police station of Gopalganj district in Bihar. He was arrested on Saturday and brought to the city on Monday.

Sharfaraz was arrested on charges of smuggling cattle to Bangladesh on the basis of the statement of another accused Dildar Hussain, who was arrested earlier.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered a crackdown in the illegal cattle cartel. Earlier a case was registered at Basistha Police station in Guwahati against cattle smuggling on the complaint of one Salim Javed Hazarika of Guwahati.


The complainant alleged that Sarfaraz and Dildar Hussain along with 14 others were accused of running a racket involving transportation of cattle illegally across Bangladesh border. It was also alleged that payments were made through hawala transactions.
