BJP and its ally AGP secured a dominant victory in the Assam panchayat elections

The ruling BJP and its ally AGP bagged all the major Zilla Parishad and Anchalik Panchayat across Assam as per the results of the panchayat elections, according to official data on Wednesday. The Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) in a statement declared the final results, four days after the counting of panchayat election votes started on Sunday morning at 8 am across 39 counting centres.

Panchayat elections took place in two phases on May 2 and 7 in Assam's 27 districts for the first time after the delimitation of the constituencies.

According to ASEC data, the BJP has won 1,261 members of Anchalik Panchayat (AP) constituencies, while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has bagged 184 seats so far.


Opposition Congress has won 481 seats, while 64 seats have been bagged by AIUDF, 17 by Raijor Dal, four by Trinamool Congress, three by Assam Jatiya Parishad, one by AAP and 173 by Independents.

In Zilla Parishad (ZP), the BJP has won 274 seats along with 27 seats by its ally AGP. Congress bagged 72 seats, while eight were won by AIUDF, three by Raijor Dal and 13 by Independents, the ASEC data showed.

"Election to 21,920 Gaon Panchayat wards were held without political party sponsorship and accordingly results were declared for the said wards," it added.

The total seats include 21,920 Gram Panchayat (GP) members, with 10,883 seats reserved for women. Voting also happened for 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat (AP) members, with 1,124 reserved for women and 397 Zilla Parishad (ZP) members, with 199 seats reserved for women.

As many as 2,912 candidates have won uncontested -- 34 ZP members, 311 AP members and 2,567 GP ward members.

A total electorate of 1,80,36,682, comprising 90,71,264 men, 89,65,010 women and 408 others, were eligible to exercise their franchise in 25,007 polling stations.

A total of 74.71 per cent of the eligible voters exercised their franchise during the two-phase panchayat polls.
