GUWAHATI: Assam joined the rest of the country in observing Anti-Terrorism day today with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi administering a pledge to the officers and staff of Assam Secretariat to work for promoting peace and discourage violence.

Anti-terrorism Day is observed on the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to generate awareness in the country among all sections of people about the danger of terrorism and violence and its effect on people, society and the country as a whole, Gogoi said.

Paying rich tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on his 24th death anniversary today, Gogoi said the objective behind the observance of Anti-Terrorism Day is also to wean away people from terrorism and violence.

In another programme in the city, the Chief Minister paid floral homage to the former Prime Minister and appealed to the people to emulate the ideals of Rajiv Gandhi who laid the edifice of a modern and vibrant India.

He also said that Rajiv Gandhi always accorded top priority to science and technology which is responsible for making a digital India today.
