Assam MLA Bharat Chandra Narah quits Congress

The resignation comes two days after Congress announced Uday Shankar Hazarika as its candidate for the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat. Narah was hopeful that his party would nominate his wife Ranee Narah, a former Union Minister, for the seat.

Guwahati: Bharat Chandra Narah, the MLA of Nowboicha in Assam's Lakhimpur district, resigned from the Congress.

The resignation comes two days after Congress announced Uday Shankar Hazarika as its candidate for the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat. Narah was hopeful that his party would nominate his wife Ranee Narah, a former Union Minister, for the seat.

Narah who left Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) was a prominent face in Congress for last two decades.

Recently Assam Pradesh Congress Committee’s working president Rana Goswami resigned from the party and joined BJP.

Exodus from Assam Congress has increased. Several leaders such as Shankar Prasad Rai, Ratul Kurmi, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Basanta Das have quit the party for various reasons. Congress also suspended South Karimganj MLA Siddique Ahmed for cross-voting in Rajya Sabha elections.
