Assam lynching case: Police arrest main accused who incited mob

Police have arrested Alphajoz Timung, the man who incited the mob to lynch two youths in KarbiAnglong on June 8.

Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia said that police have arrested the prime accused in mob lynching case, identified as Alphajoz.

Saikia detailed that investigation is heading in right direction. “Timung called up some people in Panjuri village and asked the mob to intercept a black SUV used by Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath.”


The DGP added, “Both the youths had gone to the Kangthilangso waterfalls for some leisure time. They had some altercation with Alphajoz. Following this Timung called up some people and texted messages to villagers stating that these youths were child abductors and they are trying to escape with a minor boy.”

Saikia said that message and phone triggered mob to lynch the youths to death. Timung had earlier instigated mob to murder one Mintu Das.

The DGP added police have so far arrested 28 persons for their involvement in lynching the two youth. Around 36 other persons have also been arrested for spreading hate messages and circulating video regarding lynching of the two youths on different social networking sites.

The killing of two youths has led to public outcry in Assam with people protesting and demanding justice.
