Guwahati: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has expressed deep concern over the recent reported attack on a camp of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) in Myanmar.

AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and General Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan warned that such incidents could potentially disrupt the ongoing peace efforts in Assam.

Reacting strongly to the development, the AJP leaders stated, “We are concerned over the incident of attack on a camp of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent). This event has the potential to derail the ongoing peace process in the state.”

Highlighting the need for an inclusive and meaningful peace, the AJP leadership criticised the failure of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in taking effective steps to bring the ULFA (Independent) to the negotiating table. Gogoi and Bhuyan recalled that on the very day the tripartite peace accord was signed with pro-talk factions on December 29, 2023, the Chief Minister had hailed the agreement as a “major step” and expressed hope that it would pave the way for talks with Paresh Baruah-led ULFA (Independent).

“Yet, since then, no concrete steps have been taken by the state government to ensure a dignified political resolution of the ULFA (Independent) issue,” they noted, calling it a clear reflection of the Chief Minister’s failure to follow through on his public commitments.

The AJP also criticised the Chief Minister’s silence and inaction in the wake of the recent attack. “His indifference even after such a serious development reveals his weakness in dealing with the issue and also reflects his diminished influence and relevance before the Centre,” the statement said.

Reiterating its stand, the AJP leadership affirmed, “We do not want the peace process in Assam to be derailed. To ensure lasting peace, a respectful political solution to the ULFA (Independent) issue is essential, and that is what we seek.”

The party underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and political sensitivity in resolving long-pending insurgency-related issues in the state, emphasizing that peace cannot be achieved through military means or neglect, but through acknowledgement, dignity, and constructive political engagement.

Proscribed militant ULFA- Independent claimed that at least three senior soldiers were killed, and 19 others were injured after the Indian Army launched a massive operation along the Indo-Myanmar border.

The Army however claimed that it had not carried out any such operation. Defence sources said, “no inputs with Indian Army on such operation.”

ULFA (Independent) also known as the anti-talk faction of ULFA in a statement stated, “Indian Army had launched drone attacks between Longwa in Indo -Myanmar border near Nagaland to Pangsau Pass along the international border near Arunachal Pradesh. The attack took place between 2 am to 4 am on Sunday. The outfit claimed that there was another attack later in the day on Sunday. The mobile camps of the banned outfit and RPF/PLA camps are affected severely as the Indian forces have dropped about 150 bombs in the entire area using drones made in Israel and France”.
