Assam Governor kick-started controversy after praising commander of Ahom kingdom
GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Banowarilal Purohit has kick started a controversy after he praised commander of Ahom kingdom, Lachit Borphukan as the “saviour of Hindutva”.

Lachit is known for his legendary leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat where Mughals were defeated.

Purohit while visiting the Lachit Moidam (crematorium and memorial) at Lahdoigarh in Jorhat district on Tuesday praised the legendary great General who fought against the mighty Mughals and defeated them but termed him as a ‘Saviour of Hindutva’.

“The name of Lachit Borphukan is written in the pages of history with golden words. He struggled against the Mughals along with his forces. It is due to Lachit Borphukan and other like him that Hindutva had been saved here,” said Purohit while speaking at a function organized near the Moidam on Tuesday.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) attacked the Governor and asked him to study about the national heroes. Former Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi remarked that projecting Lachit as Hindu is grave injustice to the national hero
