GUWAHATI: The Assam government has decided to table a legislation in the assembly in February that will mandate that the land of indigenous people can only be sold to indigenous people.

The state cabinet also decided to recommend to the Centre to amend Article 375 of the Constitution and make Assamese the state language permanently. Though Assamese is the state language now, Bengali and Bodo are also spoken in large sections of the state.

The measures are aimed at the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protestors who fear that the law would start an influx of people from Bangladesh and this would threaten the language, culture and tradition of Assam.

Saturday also saw protests led by women at Latasil field in Guwahati and several other locations of the state to protest the CAA.
