Assam government assures security to singer Nahid Afrin

GUWAHATI: With some clerics issuing fatwa against singer Nahid Afrin, Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonwal condemned the same.

Sonowal directed State Police to provide security cover to the young prodigy.

Terming the same as despicable, he said that such a move cannot be tolerated in a civilised society.

Sonowal said, “Such a ruling against practising art and culture is unacceptable and is tantamount to infringement of one’s freedom of cultural rights”.

Chief Minister Sonowal had a telephonic conversation with Nahid Afrin and assured her of all assistance.He assured to provide her security so that she can continue pursuing her vocations fearlessly.

Sonowal also said that the State Government is committed to providing security to all artistes in Assam and maintain an environment conducive to pursue art and culture.

"A section of vicious force is out to disturb the age old bonhomie of Assam, " the chief minister added.
