The flood situation in Assam improves with the level of the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries falling since Friday.

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam improved on Saturday with the level of the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries falling since Friday.

Although 26 districts were still reeling under the floods and the death toll shot upto 23, the affected people saw light at the end of the tunnel as the Brahmaputra was receding along its course, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters here on Saturday.

He said that more than 60 lakh people had been affected by the floods.

Stating that an official probe has been ordered into breach in more than 55 embankments, the chief minister said that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to visit the flood-affected areas during a day-long trip on August seven.

Gogoi said that there was no shortage of relief material. However, a central team under Gandhi would provide additional funds after taking stock of the situation.

The state government is monitoring the situation and keeping stock of the availability of medicines to prevent outbreak of diseases, he said adding, the government has geared up its machinery to see that the victims were properly rehabilitated.
