Assam flood situation continues to be grim

Flood waters breached an embankment in the Lakhimpur district of Assam.

GUWAHATI: Flood waters breached an embankment in the Lakhimpur district of Assam as several other districts continued to reel under swirling waters of Brahmaputra and its tributaries due to second wave of floods, official sources said.

The embankment was breached in Mathmara area of Lakhimpur which is suffering since the first wave of floods hit in June. People have been shifted to safer places while work is on to repair the embankment, sources said.

Release of excess water by the North Eastern Electrical Power Corporation from its dams in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh is reported to have resulted in the flooding earlier.

Two weeks ago, the second wave of floods hit Assam with areas like Dhakuakhana and Bihpuria being the worst hit. More than 25 lakh people have been affected.

In the Dhemaji district, vast tracts of habitation and cropland have been inundated by rising water of Rivers Gai and Jiadhol.
