Assam copes with draught, flood

Assam is witnessing two different extreme weather conditions.

GUWAHATI: Assam is witnessing two different extreme weather conditions. While many districts are reeling under draught, flooding has started in some districts of Upper Assam.

Fed by incessant rain there has been breaches of National highway 52 at three places. Railway line has been submerged by waters at two places. In Dhemaji district in the North bank of river Brahmaputra around 100 villages are affected.

Sources in the state government added, "In Lakhimpur district erosion is taking places in some places. River Kakoi has breached embankment in couple of places thereby effecting seven villages".

Sources added that two persons were feared killed after being washed away in the flood water. However there is no official confirmation to it.

A contingent of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were engaged in rescue operation. The state government has requested the Centre to send one more contingent of the NDRF.
