Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) is considering initiating legal action against those who have alleged that Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife have links to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence.

Gogoi stated that APCC has reached out to the legal team of All-India Congress Committee (AICC). "We have already discussed the matter with AICC's legal team and we will take the next step forward."

Assam Police on Monday lodged a first information report against Pakistani national Ali Tauqueer Sheikh and some others for alleged anti-India activities after the state Cabinet, led by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday directed the police to lodge a case against him and to find whether his alleged association with Gaurav Gogoi's wife, Elizabeth Clare Gogoi, a British national, had any implications on the nation's security and sovereignty.

The Assam Cabinet meeting has directed DGP to register a case against Pakistani national, Ali Taugeer Sheikh. The government has also constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the cases.

The Assam Cabinet directed an extensive inquiry to ascertain whether these activities were part of a larger conspiracy and to identify any sympathisers or associates within Assam and across India who may be aiding Sheikh's anti-India agenda.

"Examine individuals, organisations and accomplices based in Assam and rest of India who have aided and abetted Ali Sheikh's actions against India. Seek relevant assistance and information from concerned agencies and departments of the government of India and government of Assam," it was stated. The Cabinet noted that Assam has historically remained a hotspot for ISl-sponsored activities, necessitating heightened vigilance and decisive action.

The state government said following a scrutiny of his social media activity and information available in public domain, it appeared that Ali Sheikh had been in contact with Elizabeth Gogoi.
