Assam CM Himanta Sarma meets Sitharaman, Joshi; discusses flood relief, education and more

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the national capital and briefed her on the state’s ongoing response to the recent floods, including damage assessment and the roadmap for rebuilding affected areas and restoring livelihoods.

Sharing details of the meeting on X, Sarma said, “It is always a pleasure to meet Hon’ble Finance Minister Smt @nsitharaman Ji, who has consistently been a strong champion of Assam’s interests and aspirations.”

During the meeting at Kartavya Bhawan, the Chief Minister apprised the Union Finance Minister of the #AssamFloodResponse, with particular focus on the ongoing assessment of flood damage and the measures planned for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of affected areas.


He also outlined the state government’s roadmap for restoring livelihoods and providing assistance to flood-affected families as part of the next phase of the response.

Sarma said the Union Finance Minister heard Assam’s concerns “with great attention and sensitivity” and expressed gratitude for her positive response to the state’s requirements.

Sitharaman assured the Chief Minister that the Government of India would continue to stand firmly with Assam as the state works to help flood-affected families rebuild their lives.

“I am deeply grateful for her positive response and assurance that the Government of India will stand firmly with Assam as we work to help every flood-affected family rebuild their lives,” Sarma said in his post.

The meeting comes as Assam continues to assess the impact of the floods and undertake rehabilitation, reconstruction and livelihood restoration efforts in the worst-hit districts, including Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat.

Sarma also met Union Minister Pralhad Joshi at his residence in New Delhi and discussed key priorities for Assam, including education, food and civil supplies, and renewable energy.

Following the meeting, Sarma described the interaction as a “very productive meeting” and said, “Our discussions covered key priorities for Assam across education, food and civil supplies, and renewable energy.”

The Chief Minister also expressed his gratitude to the Union Minister “for his positive approach and continued support for Assam”.

Joshi said Sarma had visited his Delhi residence for the first time since taking oath for his second consecutive term as Chief Minister of Assam.

“Chief Minister of Assam Shri @himantabiswa ji visited my Delhi residence today for the first time since taking oath for his second consecutive term as Chief Minister of Assam,” Joshi said.

He said the discussions focused on ways to “further strengthen and streamline the implementation of #SamagraShiksha in Assam”, with particular emphasis on ensuring robust and seamless financial support for teachers under the scheme.

The two leaders also discussed ensuring seamless fund flow under the SNA-SPARSH mechanism, in line with the scheme’s framework, to facilitate timely salary disbursement and strengthen the delivery of quality and equitable school education across Assam.

The meeting also covered key issues related to food and civil supplies and renewable energy, reflecting the continued focus on Centre-State cooperation for Assam’s development.
