Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi asks Prime minister to expedite NRC update

Gogoi requested the Prime Minister to increase the number of Foreigners’ Tribunals from the existing 36 to 100.

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday met Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at his official residence in New Delhi. In course of the discussions, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi requested Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to expeditiously commence the process of NRC updation in order to fulfil the consensus arrived at the highest level in May 2005.

Gogoi requested the Prime Minister to increase the number of Foreigners’ Tribunals from the existing 36 to 100 as the existing ones are inadequate to dispose of large number of pending cases, thus leading to harassment of genuine citizens. “The sensitive nature of work of the Foreigners’ Tribunals require speedy and smooth disposal of cases. As such, there is an urgent need to increase the number of Foreigners’ Tribunals from the present strength of 36 to at least 100 Tribunals,” he said. A proposal was sent in this regard to MHA on September 11 last year.
