AGP is an ally of BJP and part of NDA. Opposition chooses not to field candidates for the Upper house seats. The last date for filing of nomination was Thursday.
An official said, “Both the Purkayastha and Baishya were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha as there is no opposition candidate,” the official said.
The elections to the two Rajya Sabha seats were scheduled for June 19. Purkayastha is making a parliamentary debut. He is son of former union minister Kabindra Purkayastha. Kanad Purkayastha is also the BJP’s state unit secretary.
Baishya is former union minister, and this is his third stint in the Upper House of Parliament.
Elections to two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam were necessitated with the terms of Baishya and BJP’s Mission Ranjan Das ending on June 14.
