Assam: AIUDF stages walkout after Speaker disallows motion against eviction drives

Speaker Biswajit Daimary informed the House that he has rejected the motion brought by AIUDF. AIUDF members went to the Well of the House, showed placards and raised slogans against eviction exercise of the Assam government.

Opposition party All India United Democratic Front staged a walkout in the first day of winter session of the state assembly after Speaker did not allow adjournment motion on the eviction drives at Batardraba in Assam's Nagaon district.

Batadrava Than is the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev (the 15th century saint-reformer of Assam).

Speaker Biswajit Daimary informed the House that he has rejected the motion brought by AIUDF. AIUDF members went to the Well of the House, showed placards and raised slogans against eviction exercise of the Assam government.


Meanwhile the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly and leader of Assam Congress Legislature Party (ACLP), Debabrata Saikia has constituted a fact finding delegation under the leadership of Rakibul Hussain, Deputy Leader, ACLP to visit recently evicted areas. The delegation will also meet the Officials of district administration to find out the status of the relief and rehabilitation provided to the evicted families and distribute relief materials, etc. to the needy people.

The eviction drive is expected to be wrapped up in the next couple of days. In October this year over 1,000 notices were served asking people there to vacate the land.

Last during an eviction drive in Darrang district in police firing two people were killed. The Assam government constituted Sattra (vaishnavite monastery) Commission has found that around 1898.04 hectares of land as Sattras are under encroachment. The commission in its interim report found that the highest encroachment has taken place in Barpeta district.

The commission submitted its report to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently. The Assam Government in fulfilment of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Election Promises and in response to various public complaints and prayers and complaints received from the Sattras and other religious institutions decided to set up a Commission to go into the factual position of the land belonging to the Sattras of Assam.
