GUWAHATI: What is seen as an attempt to quell protest, Assam government has appointed Pallav Bhattacharjee, Additional DGP (Special Branch of Assam police), as a mediator to liaise with the organizations demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Six communities are demanding ST status and had announced agaitation programme including 72 hour Assam bandh to press for their demand.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said he has already taken up the matter with the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh and the issue is moving in a right direction.

The Chief Minister assured the organizations that he will call on the Union Home Minister along with the agitating organizations to discuss about the Report of the Recommendation Committee after the Lok Sabha and Assembly by-elections are over in the state.

The Chief Minister also requested the organizations to reconsider their agitational programme and withdraw the bandh call given by them.

Representatives of the organizations expressed satisfaction on the assurance given by the Chief Minister and informed that they would reconsider their agitational programme.
