GIWAHATI: Asom Andolan Sangrami Manch (AASM), a platform of the participants of the Assam Movement (1979-1985) has decided to move the Supreme Court to challenge the Centre’s notification which seeks to regularize the stay of non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The leaders of AASM recently held a convention and decided that they will stoutly oppose the move of the Centre. AASM alleged that Centre has created uncertainty for lakhs of Hindus staying in Bangladesh.

Former chief minister and leader of the AASM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that the notification of the Government of India undermined the Assam Agitation and the supreme sacrifices of the 855 martyrs of the movement.

Mahanta added the notification violates the Assam Accord, which provided for detection and deportation of all the foreigners who entered Assam after the midnight of March 24, 1971.
