Ask Chidambaram not to interfere in Gujarat, Modi tells PM

Narendra Modi shot off a letter to PM Singh complaining against Chidambaram for trying to “promote indiscipline” in the police force.

AHMEDABAD: On a day when the Gujarat government charge-sheeted senior police officer Rahul Sharma, chief minister Narendra Modi on Saturday shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh complaining against Union home minister P Chidambaram for trying to “promote indiscipline” in the police force.
“The Congress-led UPA government is trying to destabilize the democratically elected government of Gujarat,” Modi said in his letter.

Chidambaram had on Friday offered the Centre’s help to police officers facing disciplinary action at the hands of the Modi government for not toeing the political line in the probe into 2002 riots.
Describing this as “blatant interference” , Modi said those who are making such comments should be told not to do so. He said the “relationship and power structure between the Centre and the state have been clearly demarcated. Such blatant remarks by the home minister will create deep crisis in the federal fabric of the nation... ”

Why is the govt scared?

In October 2004, Sharma submitted before the Nanavati Commission two CDs with details of calls made to or from 43 telephones. The commission inexplicably sealed the CDs for three years and denied Jan Sangharsh Manch permission to have the data scrutinized by experts. Meanwhile, copies were placed by Sharma before the UC Banerjee Committee and the Manch got access too. It got the data analysed and made a fresh application before the Nanavati panel demanding examination of seven people, including chief minister Narendra Modi.It was then that the government realized the real damage potential of the CDs.
