NEW DELHI: ASG Harin Raval resigned today in the wake of an ugly spat with the Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati over who misled the Supreme Court into thinking that the CBI status report into coal block allocations had not been vetted by the political executive.

A source said that he sent in his resignation earlier in the day. Law ministry sources are yet to confirm whether it has been accepted.

Raval had yesterday written to Vahanvati accusing him of making him a scapegoat. He had claimed that Vahanvati had first misled the court, prompting him to back his senior colleague.

Vahanvati insists that he has not seen the draft report and that he only claimed in court that he never had the report and "still does not have it".
