The 10 Asean leaders, who attended the 69th Republic Day as chief guests, were impressed by India’s military might and cultural diversity on display at the parade. PM Narendra Modi personally received each of the leader as they arrived to the venue.

Two tableaux also showcased India’s bonds with Asean. This was the first occasion that MEA organised two tableaux on Republic Day. The common threads of Buddhism, Ramayana, education and trade links were highlighted at the tableaux.

While Vietnam PM took keen interest when Indian defence might was displayed and was seen discussing a point or two with the Indonesian President, Singapore PM was seen clicking pictures of camel contingent from his mobile.


The marching contingents started with flag bearer contingent displaying the Indian and 10 Asean countries. The Indian Army’s T-90 tank, Ballway Machine Pikate (II/IIK), Brahmos Missile System, weapon locating radar (Swathi), bridge laying tank T-72, mobile base transceiver station and Akash weapon system were on display at Rajpath.

Modi, who wore a traditional Rajasthani headgear, shook hands with the Asean leaders as they arrived. The leaders and their spouses wore a traditional Indian scarf.

To ward off the January chill, the Asean dignitaries were offered Naga shawls in the R-Day enclosure as suggested by foreign minister Sushma Swaraj. The minister also took special care of each and every leader and delegates with their hotel room keys depicting respective flags. Besides, pillows used by all 10 leaders in hotel rooms had their names etched on them. All the 10 Asean leaders arrived at Republic Day enclosure one after another in nine minutes. The entire exercise over last three years with the 10 leaders staying in five city hotels were smooth with no glitch.

Driven by this summit, the 10 Asean leaders desired that India plays pro-active role in ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, according to senior officials. Impressed by India’s drive towards creating cashless society, the Asean leaders also sought support from India in fight against corruption.
