AAP wins Bawana bypoll, BJP comes 2nd
NEW DELHI: In a comeback of sorts, Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today won Bawana bypoll. The retaining of seat will be a massive shot in the arm for the AAP that has been on a steep downward slide since its massive victory in Delhi assembly polls in 2015.

AAP candidate Ram Chander won the seat by getting 59,886 votes ahead of BJP's Ved Prakash who got 35,834 votes. Finishing third, Congress's Surender Kumar garnered 31,919 votes.

The by-poll was necessitated after AAP MLA Ved Prakash quit the party and resigned from the assembly seat to join the BJP.

One of the 12 reserved constituencies, with close to three lakh voters, Bawana is one of the largest constituencies in Delhi.

The by-poll was held on August 23, which saw a meagre turnout of 45 per cent.

In the 70-member Delhi Assembly, the AAP will now have 66 MLAs and BJP 4.
