Arun Jaitley no more, condolences pour in from across political spectrum

Former finance minister Arun Jaitley passed away today at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences after a period of prolonged illness. The veteran BJP leader, who was brought in to the hospital on August 9, was on life support and was being monitored by a multidisciplinary team of doctors.

Leaders across the political divide are expressing their condolences.



BJP President has also expressed sadness over Jaitley's death.

The Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana have expressed their grief over the demise of former Finance Minister and senior BJP leader after prolonged illness at the AIIMS.

"Sad to hear that former Union Minister Arun Jaitley ji has passed away. My thoughts are with his family in this time of grief. May his soul rest in peace," Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted.

His counterpart in Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, said the death of Jaitley was an irreparable loss to the BJP and Indian politics.

“I am deeply shocked to learn about the demise of Shri Arun Jaitley, a long time dear friend and one of my closest associates. His death is an irreparable loss to the nation and a personal loss to me. I have no words to express my grief.

Outstanding Parliamentarian, legal luminary, towering intellectual, an able administrator and a man of impeccable integrity, Shri Jaitley distinguished himself by effectively handling important portfolios as Union Minister in the cabinets of Shri A.B. Vajpayee and Shri Narendra Modi .


He was also a recipient of the Best Parliamentarian Award.

Shri Jaitley strove hard and burnt the midnight oil to bring about a consensus across the political spectrum in ushering the revolutionary GST regime in the country. He made immense contribution to public discourse on various issues from time to time.

He was also a communicator par excellence and used to articulate the most complex issues in a simple manner.”
